Choosing the Right Tactical Headset for SWAT and Military Teams

The right military radio headsets are essential for a well-functioning and successful SWAT or military team. You want communication to be clear and reliable at all times, without even the slightest interruption.

Before you start your search for a SWAT radio supplier, you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. Use these 5 essential questions to guide you to the right model.

1. Ear covers or a hybrid with earplugs?

When looking for an electronic headset, you need to think about the conditions the team will work in. For hotter, more humid regions, you would want them to wear hybrid models with earplugs. A headset that covers the entire ear can cause sweating and substantial discomfort.

Keep in mind that a full ear cover in the heat is even more unpleasant under a ballistic helmet. If the SWAT/military team is to operate in milder or colder climates, a full ear cover will do.

2. What band style to you want?

There are three popular band styles for tactical helmets:

A classic headband style

The neckband style

APC attachment

The most popular of these three is the neckband style. Not only is it smaller, but it can also be folded and stored when not in use. Although headbands are still in use, they are heavier and almost impossible to take off when wearing a ballistic helmet. For shorter missions, we recommend the APC attachment to the helmet. It’s easier to communicate if the setup is integrated into your headwear.

3. One or more radios?

Different missions require different forms of communication. Sometimes, interoperability will be a priority so you will need more than one two-way radio. Single COMM setups are the standard and they only support two-way communication from one point or another.

If a mission requires cooperation between you, command and a third individual organization, you will want to choose a Dual COMM setup. The third type, the Dual COMM with split audio can be set up with a standard dual PTT adapter.

4. Which color do I prefer?

The color of the headset is an important factor when purchasing the needed SWAT and military headwear. Even the slightest lack of consistency in terms of color and placement can help an opposing force spot you. To ensure that your mission is not being compromised, you need to pick a color that matches the rest of your gear.

Sand-tones and olive-green textures are used for most missions. However, the best choice is finding a tactical headset with a camouflage print suited to the environment in which you’re operating.

5. To what intercom or radio am I connecting the headset?

Before you purchase a SWAT or military tactical headset, you want to make sure the model is compatible with your radio. Whether it’s a Motorola, Harris or Kenwood radio, they all have different specifications that might not pair with third-party headsets.

Don’t be afraid to contact the manufacturer directly if you are interested in making a bulk purchase. CJ Components is a reputable manufacturer and supplier whom you can consult when researching this type of equipment. They know all the headsets that are compatible with each product and can provide you with customized solutions to suit your needs.
